THE FIRST CONCEPT STORE IN AFRICA
Located on the bustling Long Street in Cape Town South Africa, in the heart of the City Bowl, is Merchants on Long, Africa's first concept store. Home to the widest variety in luxury African fashion brands since 2010, Merchants is hot spot for locals and tourists looking the products made on the African continent at the highest quality.
Merchants on Long stocks brands such as Okapi Bags, Maxhosa, Chulaap, Lalaela Projects and Smith from South Africa. Osei Duro from Ghana, Zuri Kenya and Xipixi from Mozambique, just to name a few.
As I walked in for the first, I got a true sense of Africa. The store is decorated and merchandized beautifully showcasing pieces of culture from parts of the continent. The wooden furniture, the art displays, artifacts, the spurts of green plants and the mood lighting transmits your mind to corners of the richest land in the world, Africa!
One of my favorite parts of the store is the the corner with the ostrich which was once a live. You get a sense of the majestic bird in its true height and mass with its intricate features still in tact. The building itself breathes a strong sense of history as your feet step on its wooden floors or staircase. This building has been home to many merchants since the 1896 housing business and art galleries.
Then there is the color, springing from no other place than the clothes on the racks. Prints in cotton, wool, linen for garments to accessories. Each rack is carefully labelled with the name and description of each fashion brand curated for the store.
Above I am wearing a wool dress with hand print detail from Rich Mnisi. Tassled jumper from Maxhosa.
The coral print dress I swear here is from Zuri, made in Kenya. The delicate yet breathtakingly beautiful neck piece is from And Banana.
